Comprehensive physical, psychological, and social rehabilitation

Without timely care, burn injuries can leave lifelong scars that go far beyond the skin. Limited mobility, chronic pain, and emotional trauma can affect a child for decades.

Burn recovery requires comprehensive care — from physical and occupational therapy to psychological support and reconstructive treatment.

The Burned Children Foundation is the U.S. fundraising arm of COANIQUEM, the world’s largest free pediatric burn rehabilitation center, headquartered in Santiago, Chile. Since 1979, COANIQUEM has provided comprehensive rehabilitation to children across Latin America, completely free of charge, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

Martina Díaz Halvorsen: A Story of Hope and Resilience

Martina Díaz Halvorsen arrived at COANIQUEM in June 2015 after suffering multiple burns to her face and hands in a fire at her home when she was just one year and four months old. Her mother and brother were also injured in the same accident, and her brother likewise received rehabilitation treatment at COANIQUEM.

Since then, Martina has embarked on a wonderful journey of rehabilitation alongside the COANIQUEM team, receiving comprehensive care that has allowed her to make progress not only in her physical recovery but also in her personal and emotional development.

She is a cheerful, creative girl full of enthusiasm. She loves to draw and is part of the Scouting movement, where she enjoys spending time with other children, learning, and embarking on new adventures.

Martina’s story reflects the impact that COANIQUEM’s comprehensive rehabilitation has on the lives of thousands of children and adolescents. Thanks to the support of those who believe in our mission, more children like Martina can regain their confidence, develop their talents, and build a future full of opportunities.
